The Sunbelt Senior Tour’s South Carolina Open takes place this week at Tidewater Plantation and Golf Club. Players from Switzerland, Bermuda, Australia, England and Canada are among the 60 golfers competing for the $8,000 first prize.  Previous champion Steve Thomas, of Mississippi, will be defending his title against other regulars, including last-year’s runner-up, Georgia’s Tim Conley. Although the tournament is celebrating its seventh year, this will be just the third time the event has been held in Myrtle Beach. Aside from the healthy competition and attractive purse, both the North Strand Helping Hand and Autism Advocate Foundation charities will benefit from sponsorship money. Event directors have reported that volunteers for this year’s Myrtle Beach golf tournament have dramatically increased. A free Golf Fest will be open for the public to attend from noon to 4 pm on Sunday; featuring a long drive and trick shot demonstration, as well as food and entertainment. http://www.tide-water.com/course.htm

Architect Dan Maples has woven a bit of his own magic into the design of The Wizard and Man o War. The transformed landscape is alluring to the eye, but full of devilish elevation changes that will keep even the most experienced player on their toes. The Witch is an elemental enchantress, with nearly 4,000 feet of graceful bridges wend their way through the landscape, tranquil wetlands left intact as nature's perfect hazard.
