Thanks to the vast number of golf courses along the Grand Strand, it’s no big surprise that the history of some of them run deep and true. At the top of the list is Willbrook Plantation, which sits on the site of two former South Carolina plantations. Take a trip there and you’ll be immediately struck by the centuries-old oak forest and dramatic situation among wetlands and waterways. Noted as being a stand-out for creating harmony between golf and nature, this beautiful course tests the tactical abilities of players. However, one of the more fascinating features of Willbrook is situated near the eighth hole. A plaque marks this particular area as a slave graveyard, the resting site of some of the 149 field laborers who worked the area a lifetime ago. Some of the remains of the plantation still exist, too, and can be seen near the fairway of the fifth hole. So, if you’re looking to soak up a little local history while playing a round or two, add Willbrook Plantation to your next Myrtle Beach golf package---a great play in an environment that rivals the best.

WorldGolf.com has ranked what they believe are the best drivers for 2007. Top of the list? The unique-looking Hippo Hex2, which retails for approximately $200. The Hippo’s odd, angled six sides decreases air resistance, helping to increase head speed. The result? Balls fly further, much further. Second on the hot-list is the Tour Edge GeoMax, which also runs in the $200 range. With a helpful 44-inch standard shaft, the key to the GeoMax is its tremendous MOI (moment of inertia) influence. Regardless if you hit the ball off-center, the GeoMax ensures energy is transferred positively, helping keep your shots straight, and in the fairway. The Nickent 4DX rounds out the top-three with a price tag of around $260. It is well worth the price, however, if you want some of the longest drives of your life. If you want to impress your friends--or just beat them--on your next Myrtle Beach golf vacation, head to the store, now, and add a little fighting power to your golf bag.

The Brick Landing Plantation Yacht & Golf Club, owned and managed by Dan Maples, is undergoing a fantastic transformation. New tee boxes, white-sand bunkers and bent grass greens have already been put into place, but three holes will soon be completely reconfigured in the near future. Maples is overseeing the changes, himself, including a new, plantation-style clubhouse and a 4,000-square-foot private dining area in the upper portion of the existing clubhouse. The course has assured the community that even during the heaviest construction, 18 holes will always be available for play, so be sure to include it in your next Myrtle Beach golf package.

Pawleys Island’s Jeremy Pope has reached a milestone in his professional golf career. The 35-year-old currently ranks as the top-earning golfer in the Gateway Tour, leading by almost $4,000 over the next in line, Brian Kontak. Pope has been competing professionally for over 10 years, and is right on the verge of reaching the next level of the sport in either the PGA or Nationwide. In 1999, Pope didn’t make the cut in his only PGA event, but has evolved his attitude over the years from seeing golf as a career, rather than a dream job---hence putting much more focus, time and determination into his game. Since his wife still lives here, the pro returns to play Myrtle Beach golf courses frequently, using the time as warm-ups for other tournaments.
